New Series a-comin

Hello, Friends,

In the past few years I have noticed a pattern in online communication. I’ll look at a blog post, a forum post, or a video clip, and almost inevitably someone who doesn’t like something about it has posted a rude comment, which in turn draws a bitter or even obscene response from the original author or someone else. More people jump into the ruckus, exchanging a regular fusillade of malice, and it goes downhill from there. (The animal world sometimes does the same thing, as I described a couple of weeks ago.)

Do you suppose it might be possible to soften these online feuds, maybe before they even start? I have been studying some specific ways people can exchange ideas without starting a gang war. I will share the results in a series, in hopes that we can all benefit from more effective communication. Or at least gain some food for thought. Over the next week I plan to cover three aspects of online conversation:

“The Soapbox” (Posting an opinion piece)
“The Snappy Comeback” (Disagreeing with someone else’s opinion)
“The Skeleton Closet” (Posting about your family)

Meanwhile, I am linking up with my Company Girls friends today. Ladies, you might like my post from the other day, all about a sewing project that could have gone better

Thanks for reading,
Jan

About Jan C. Johnson

Welcome! If you like food, reading, laughing over life's little disasters, and maybe thinking about the bigger things of life, you have come to the right place. Besides blogging, I write humorous fiction, though real life tends to leave fictional humor in the shade. But I'm not a total goofball. No, really. I'm also working on a biography project. I live in North Texas with my husband, Brent. We enjoy bicycling, Mexican food, and traveling to visit our kids and grandkids.

Well, can’t wait to read this, sounds most interesting. My blog is usually just “snippets” of my life and not a lot more. I’m not much into using it as a “soapbox” or venue for controversial subjects. I cannot wait to read your entry, “The Skeleton Closet.” I never have understood the need of folks to air their “dirty laundry” through their blog so I look forward to hearing what you have to say.

Blessings for a wonderful week-end and do drop by if you have a minute.

  2. Jan, I think especially YouTube seems to have vitriolic and even obscene comments after many of its videos. I enjoy watching beauty gurus on YouTube, and the amount of hateful criticism they get is appalling…I couldn’t do it for that reason! You’d have to have a pretty thick skin not to let it bother you. I’m glad you’re addressing this type of thing, and am making a note to come back and read.

Sounds interesting. I hate it when people are ugly when they comment. I know there will always be those that disagree but I hate it when it gets personal or insulting…look forward to your posts!

    Have a great weekend!

I had to laugh at the sewing story – been there, done that. Zippers make life much easier.

There seem to be bloggers who deliberately try to provoke nasty comments (maybe under the delusion that any comment is a good thing?); I stay away from them. I also exercise my right to not continue reading when I don’t like what someone is saying – it’s much less effort to just click “close”!

Looking forward to the series. I understand when people don’t agree with one another, but there is always a nicer way to say things without being rude.

    Have a nice weekend.

I guess that’s what the “delete” option is for. But some bloggers are acutely aware that controversy sells, too, and may draw it out deliberately for the sake of having more people show up, even if it gets ugly.
That’s not to say I encourage it at all! I keep to flying the friendly internet skies, and try never to get involved in something that quickly goes to the lowest common denominator.

Nice to meet you. I agree that the blog comment world can get pretty ugly. I have learned not to take comments of any kind (on my blog, or to my face) personally. My husband is in the ministry and with that comes the good, the bad, and the ugly. Words can sting, and therefore I try to watch my mouth (and what I say on line).

It will be interesting to read your series. Thanks for sharing over Company Girl coffee.
